It’s true, you can learn an easy guitar song in one hour with the proper instructor. The correct teacher can sit down with a new guitar student and instruct the student how to play an easy guitar song that you are familiar with in less than an hour. This is an example. It is also a quick lesson, out of the normal order I would teach you in, without the preliminary ingredients, like how to hold a guitar properly and an explanation of how a guitar works. I sat down with a smart 10 year old girl. She is learning to play piano, but really wants to learn to play the guitar.
I asked her what song she liked. The song she said is called Firework. I’m not at all familiar with it. So I asked her to play it for me so I know how it sounds. Then we found some free tab on the computer, with the chords and words [and printed it up]. The chords are: G, Am, Em, C.
The first thing I did was use the simple forms of the guitar chords. Ones for children, kids and people with small hands. Then we slowly played and sang the song along with the chords. Once we established that I was playing the song correctly, I wrote the chords down in easy to read chord diagrams. Although her young mind was soaking the chords up ASAP.
It was an impromptu lesson. It was amazing to watch her learn the song so fast. The enjoyment that poured out of her is unforgettable. And it made me feel good to be so helpful. I fully expect her to “have it down” when I see her next. She knows in order to continue she needs good instruction.
